Pull Harder, Improve MPG & Keep Your Motor Healthy by Eliminating Boost Leaks
Test your truck for leaks the correct way, fix any boost leaks, keep the motor running healthy and tow with confidence! Even picking up 1/2 or 1 MPG over thousands of miles can convert to a significant savings every week and keep the motor happier.
A boost leak will cause the turbo wheels to over-spin to try and make up for the lost pressure. This puts a lot of strain on the turbo, and it will start to develop shaft play from running too fast, too hot and with poor oiling. Boost leaks can start out small and eventually turn into a blow-out, or worse, if left alone can eventually cause the turbo to fail.
This Charge Air Cooler tester kit is designed to fit into the flexible hoses on each side of your CAC and isolate it for a pressure test up to 60 PSI. The 2 billet end caps have 4", 3.5" and 3" steps, and each one has its own 60 PSI gauge. The 5 ft. extension line kit comes with an air pressure on/off valve and a 150 PSI pressure regulator to drop the source pressure down to a reasonable level and allow you to check the intercooler for leaks. The on/off valve allows you to cut the pressure source off and see how the intercooler holds air, visible by watching the 60 PSI mounted gauges. The machined slots and beaded edge on each step provide superior grip to help keep the tester from slipping during a high pressure test, especially on the 4" size.
It is good practice to pressure test any new CAC before install to ensure it is leak free and avoid removal and re-installation.
Being proactive with boost leaks can be just as important as other major maintenance. Left alone, they can cause costly engine repair.
The main signs you have a leak
- Lower fuel economy
- Loss of power, torque, poor towing
- Whistling noises, as awesome as they sound!
- Fluctuations on boost gauge
What's included in this kit
- (2) 6061 CNC machined end caps with 4", 3.5" and 3" steps that will fit a variety of class 7 and class 8 trucks
- (2) 60 PSI boost gauges, one mounted on each end cap
- Pressure relief valve (PRV)
- 5 ft extension hose
- Stainless steel air on/off valve
- 150 PSI air pressure regulator with gauge
- 1/4" NPT thread and the common M-type compressor fittings
Optional components to complement this kit
To get more value out of this CAC kit, you can add silicone adapter(s) for one of the end caps to work on your turbo inlet diameter. Available adapters include 3", 3.5", 3.75", 4", 5", 5.5" and 6".
With an adapter, one of the end caps can be used as a turbo boost leak tester to pressurize the whole charge pipe path from the turbo to the motor and detect any leaks, including:
- All intercooler and charge pipes
- CAC / intercooler
- Every single clamped connection
- O-ring connections
- EGR leaks
- Intake manifold
...basically everything the turbo normally pressurizes while under boost.
Check out the recommended products section below to see the available adapters.
How to Pressure Test a Charge Air Cooler
A leaking charge air cooler (CAC) is one of the most common causes of low boost, lost power, black smoke and poor fuel mileage on diesel trucks. Cracked end tanks, worn hoses and loose clamps let boost escape before it reaches the engine. A CAC pressure test finds the leak in minutes, without guessing or replacing parts.
Testing with this kit
- Remove the hoses at both ends of the charge air cooler and install a billet end cap in each one. The stepped caps fit 3", 3.5" and 4" connections.
- Connect shop air through the 150 PSI regulator, starting at zero.
- Slowly build to 5 PSI and listen for leaks. Then work up to 10 PSI and 15 PSI, or to your truck manufacturer's test pressure.
- Close the shut-off valve and watch the gauges. A healthy CAC should hold pressure. A steady drop means a leak.
- Spray soapy water on the tanks, core and hose ends to pinpoint small leaks.
Fits: Class 7 and Class 8 semi trucks and medium-duty diesels with 3", 3.5" or 4" CAC connections. With our silicone adapters (up to 6"), you can also test the full boost path from the turbo to the intake manifold.
